Bilateral Trade Between Mauritius and South Africa Hits 12.9 Billion Rand

The celebration of South Africa’s Freedom Day took on a significant business dimension in Mauritius on Monday, 28th April, at the Plaza’s banquet hall. The event was attended by key government officials, including President Dharam Gokhool, Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam, Deputy Prime Minister Paul Bérenger, and the Speaker of the National Assembly, Shirin Aumeeruddy-Cziffra, alongside ministers, junior ministers, and ambassadors.
High Commissioner Hlamalani Nelly Manzini emphasized the strong commercial relationship that exists, noting that South Africa remains one of Mauritius’s most reliable trading partners.
She highlighted that bilateral trade volume has reached 12.9 billion rand (£600 million), with exports totaling 9.1 billion rand and imports at 3.7 billion rand, underscoring the robust economic partnership.

She pointed out the presence of numerous South African enterprises operating in Mauritius, including three major banks, which exemplifies mutual confidence in the strength of each other’s financial systems and regulatory environments. This commercial presence reflects ongoing investment opportunities and collaborative ventures that are vital for economic growth.
High Commissioner Manzini also stressed that Mauritius’s stable economy and strategic positioning as a financial and technological hub serve as a gateway to Africa, presenting opportunities for South African businesses to expand and collaborate.
She encouraged joint ventures, especially in sectors such as tourism, technology, and education, advocating for innovative cooperation that benefits both economies.
Furthermore, she highlighted ongoing collaborations like the partnership between Air Mauritius and South African Airways, emphasizing potential for joint tourism development and educational exchanges to foster business and cultural ties.
Throughout the event, performances by renowned artists and cultural displays reinforced the spirit of resilience and partnership.
