Mauritius is currently grappling with 26 active cases of chikungunya, alongside two active cases of dengue fever. The majority of these infections have been concentrated in the Baie-du-Tombeau region, raising alarm bells among health officials and the public alike.

Compounding the situation, the Ixchiq vaccine, which has been deployed in Réunion Island as part of the fight against chikungunya, has come under scrutiny.

Reports have emerged of three 3 cases linked to the vaccine, including a tragic death involving an individual over the age of 80.

This has sparked considerable concern on the sister island, as the community grapples with the implications of this development.

In the face of rising anxiety, Dr Fazil Khodabocus of the Ministry of Health and Wellness has sought to allay fears, asserting that any introduction of a vaccine in Mauritius will be predicated on a thorough evaluation of risks and benefits, conducted by a committee of experts.

As the situation unfolds, Mauritius remain on high alert, hoping for safety in the battle against these debilitating diseases.
