3 Key Safety Tips as Mauritius Faces Torrential Rain Warning

At 08:00 on Wednesday, 30th April 2025, a new and urgent warning was issued by the Meteorological Station, echoing across Mauritius: torrential rain is upon us. The skies have opened, unleashing a relentless downpour that has already soaked the land, with moderate to heavy showers continuing, particularly over the Central Plateau and the Southern and Eastern regions.

As the day unfolds, these showers are not merely a passing inconvenience; they are expected to intensify, potentially accompanied by fierce thunderstorms that threaten to exacerbate the already precarious situation.

The statistics paint a stark picture of the deluge that has gripped the island over the past 12 hours, with rainfall figures reaching alarming heights by 07:00 this morning:

  • Grand Bassin: 135.6 mm
  • Midlands: 105.0 mm
  • Wooton: 103.9 mm
  • Mare aux Vacoas: 96.3 mm
  • Vacoas: 91.1 mm
  • Rose Belle: 90.4 mm

Such heavy precipitation raises the spectre of flooding in numerous locales across the island.

Rivers and watercourses are poised to overflow, while water accumulation and dense fog are anticipated in various regions, creating a hazardous environment for all.

In light of these perilous conditions, the public is urged to heed the following advice:

  1. Seek refuge in safe locations and steer clear of open areas, hiking trails, maritime activities, and the shelter of trees during thunderstorms.
  2. Avoid areas susceptible to water accumulation, riverbanks, and other waterways that may pose a risk.
  3. Exercise extreme caution on the roads, as visibility is severely compromised by the downpour and the encroaching fog.

As Mauritius braces itself against the wrath of nature, the call for vigilance and safety rings louder than ever.
