A CALL FOR SOLIDARITY: Disabled 4-Yr-Old Child Needing Wheelchair & Bed

Nanda Veerapen, a resident of St Jean in Quatre Bornes, has reached out for assistance on behalf of his four-year-old grandson, who is burdened with severe disabilities. The child, an orphan of his mother and with a father currently in prison, faces a daily struggle as he grapples with epilepsy, blindness, mutism, and significant physical impairments.

Under the care of his maternal grandparents, the weight of responsibility rests heavily upon their shoulders.

“Today, his wheelchair has become too small for him. He is growing and requires one that is suitable for his size,” Nanda, a retired grandfather, explained with emotion.

The family has sought help from the Social Security system, and while they have been granted a meagre financial assistance of Rs 5,000, this amount falls woefully short of the estimated Rs 25,000 needed for a new wheelchair.

“With my pension, I simply cannot afford to make up the difference. We are doing everything we can to provide him with a dignified life despite his profound dependencies,” he added, his voice tinged with despair.

The Child’s Daily Comfort

In a desperate bid for support, Nanda Veerapen made his appeal on the programme Explik Ou Ka on Radio Plus.

In addition to the wheelchair, the family is also in dire need of a medical or adapted bed to ensure the child’s daily comfort.

Previously, he was cared for in a specialised convent, but for some time now, his grandparents have taken on the responsibility of ensuring his well-being themselves.

Thus, Nanda Veerapen issues a heartfelt call to anyone with a spirit of goodwill who might be willing to assist in securing a wheelchair and a bed for this vulnerable child.
