The tragic death of Neekhil Deeljore, a first-year medical student at the University of Mauritius, has cast a pall of shock and sorrow over the academic community.

This young man, who had only just embarked on his educational journey, lost his life under harrowing circumstances. The Minister of Tertiary Education, Kaviraj Sukon, has called for an internal investigation.

“It is an immense loss when a young individual, poised to pursue higher education, departs from us in such a tragic manner. I wish to convey my deepest sympathies to the family of Neekhil Deeljore. My thoughts and prayers are with them during this harrowing time,” he remarked.

The Minister underscored the necessity of an inquiry to elucidate the circumstances surrounding the student’s untimely demise.

“I am not calling for an investigation by the University as an institution. Rather, I implore the Vice-Chancellor and Pro-Vice-Chancellor to initiate an internal investigation to ascertain precisely what transpired,” Minister Sukon stated.

The inquiry must seek to understand how such a tragic incident could occur within a higher education establishment.

“The most pressing question is: Could this have been prevented? If so, how can we ensure that it does not happen again?” he added.

Kaviraj Sukon expressed his hope that the internal investigation would be conducted under the best possible conditions.

“We owe it to the family, and it is crucial to reassure everyone that this case is one too many. This is an event that must not be repeated,” he emphasised.

The death of Neekhil Deeljore has sent shockwaves through his peers, professors, and parents alike.

Eyewitness accounts suggested that the young student was unwell on the day of the examination he was due to sit.

He sought assistance at the university infirmary; however, despite receiving care, his condition deteriorated.

In light of these events, the young man’s family has engaged the services of a lawyer, voicing their concerns over unanswered questions.

They are particularly troubled by the quality of care provided and the protocols in place when a student presents with alarming symptoms.

The family and friends of Neekhil Deeljore have expressed their hope that the internal investigation will reveal whether there was any negligence or error in the handling of the student’s care.

For now, university authorities, alongside the Ministry, have pledged to closely monitor the progress of the investigation.
