Sherry Singh, the former Chief Executive Officer of Mauritius Telecom (MT), alongside his wife Varsha, has lodged a complaint against the State, seeking a staggering Rs 750 million in damages.

This legal action, filed before the Supreme Court on 23 April 2025, alleges a series of abusive arrests and unlawful searches perpetrated against the couple.

The Singhs assert that they have been subjected to egregious violations of their rights, pointing fingers at the Major Crimes Investigation Team, the Special Striking Team, and the Mauritius Revenue Authority for their alleged illegal actions.

In his statement, Sherry Singh revealed that he has faced arrest on five separate occasions, while Varsha Singh has endured two arrests.

They contended that numerous searches and interrogations conducted were devoid of legal justification.

Sherry Singh has been provisionally charged with money laundering, fraud, and tax evasion; however, to date, no formal charges have been substantiated against either of them.

The couple has levelled serious accusations against former Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, claiming that the leader of the Militant Socialist Movement has acted out of vengeance, weaponising state institutions against them.

They alleged that the charges brought against them were fabricated with the intent to intimidate.

“On multiple occasions, the former Prime Minister has threatened us with police action during his public addresses,” the plaintiffs asserted.

The saga took a particularly troubling turn when Sherry Singh recounted the incident involving “sniffing.”

He claimed that his troubles began after he publicly revealed that the former Prime Minister had requested him to authorise the installation of “Internet Traffic Sniffing” equipment at the Baie-du-Jacotet station, a revelation made during an interview with a private radio station.

The couple added that these actions have severely infringed upon their privacy and fundamental rights.

The legal document meticulously outlined the damages they have suffered: loss of professional opportunities, reputational harm, deprivation of liberty, and psychological harassment.

Sherry Singh is demanding Rs 450 million in damages, while Varsha Singh is seeking Rs 300 million.

The Singh couple’s harrowing experience under the previous regime highlights a troubling pattern of state-sanctioned persecution and abuse of power.
