During his first official visit to South Africa, Richard Duval, the Minister of Tourism, has championed the strengthening of tourism ties between the two nations.

During a recent information exchange session held in Umhlanga, he heralded the significant increase in South African arrivals and expressed optimism for the burgeoning cruise tourism sector.

South Africa and Mauritius Relations

“The tourism relations between South Africa and Mauritius are indeed fortifying,” declared Minister Duval, as he addressed attendees during the annual roadshow of the Mauritius Tourism Promotions Authority (MTPA).

His visit marks a pivotal step in enhancing the already robust connections between the two countries, which he described as a strategic market for Mauritius, as reported by the African News Agency.

In a promising announcement, Duval revealed that Mauritius welcomed over 22,000 arrivals from South Africa between January and March 2025, reflecting a commendable 5% increase compared to the same period in 2024.

“I am confident that we will once again reach the milestone of 106,000 South African visitors by the end of the year,” he asserted, his voice imbued with conviction.

The Minister also highlighted the economic prospects in South Africa, where growth is projected at 1.7% for the current fiscal year, following several years of stagnation below the 1% mark. He reminisced about the 38 years of diplomatic, cultural, and economic relations that have flourished between the two nations.

“South Africa is one of our primary markets, and we are pleased with the consistent frequency of flights from this country,” he noted.

Duval further emphasised the mutual benefits of the tourism relationship, pointing out the growing interest among Mauritians in South Africa as a travel destination.

“I have visited South Africa over 30 times. It is undoubtedly one of my favourite places. I encourage Mauritians to explore this magnificent country, with its breathtaking landscapes, warm-hearted people, and delectable cuisine,” he confided.

Another significant topic addressed was the burgeoning cruise tourism sector in South Africa.

“We are witnessing a notable increase in South African cruise passengers choosing Mauritius as their preferred destination. This form of tourism represents a new opportunity that we intend to develop further,” he affirmed.

Reflecting on the challenges faced by the sector due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Duval acknowledged the hardships endured by both nations.

“Both countries were severely impacted, but today we are witnessing a remarkable recovery that inspires us to move forward,” he emphasised.

The Minister reiterated the shared ambition of Mauritius and South Africa to position themselves among the world’s premier tourist destinations.

“Just as South Africa aspires to become a flagship destination, Mauritius is pursuing the same goal.

The rise in South African visitors is testament to the thriving state of tourism, which is on the right path for both sides,” he stated.

Speaking at the MTPA’s annual roadshow, an event deemed essential for industry professionals, Richard Duval underscored the significance of such platforms.

“This is a vital opportunity for South African operators and local travel agents to exchange ideas, forge business connections, and discuss the current challenges facing the tourism market,” he concluded, his words resonating with the promise of a bright future for tourism in both nations.
