Emmanuel Macron’s Visit to Mauritius, 10 Key Agreements Await Signing

Emmanuel Macron, the President of the French Republic, is set to embark on an official visit to Mauritius on the 24th and 25th of April 2025. This visit promises to be a significant chapter in the annals of Franco-Mauritian ties, as President Macron engages with the highest echelons of Mauritian authority.
During his stay, the French leader will pay a courtesy call to the President of the Republic of Mauritius, followed by a pivotal tête-à-tête with the Prime Minister.
The visit will culminate in a high-level meeting, bringing together both delegations, which will include the Prime Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister, and various other ministers from the Mauritian government.
Among the highlights of this visit is the joint inauguration of the Mauritius-Reunion Joint Commission, alongside a visit to the Intercontinental Slavery Museum.
President Macron will also engage with the economic sectors of Mauritius, France, and Reunion, before presiding over the inauguration of the new French Embassy in Telfair, Moka.
The Mauritius-Reunion Joint Commission, co-chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration, and International Trade, and the French Minister for Overseas Territories, Manuel Valls, is scheduled for the 25th of April.
This commission arises from a framework agreement designed to enhance cooperation between Mauritius and Reunion, focusing on key areas such as culture, tourism, biodiversity, circular economy, solid waste management, and the transition to green energy.
In a spirit of collaboration, several agreements and memoranda of understanding are expected to be signed during this visit, covering a range of vital sectors, including:
- Conservation of marine turtles, veterinary medicine, technology transfer, and research;
- Research, training, and innovation in agriculture and environmental sectors;
- Civil security cooperation between Mauritian and Reunionese fire services;
- Tourism collaboration between the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority and the Regional Tourism Committee of Reunion;
- Cultural and heritage initiatives between the Historical Museum of Villèle and the Intercontinental Slavery Museum;
- Geolocation partnerships between the Ministry of Lands and Housing and Réseau Teria (Mauritius) Ltd;
- Economic cooperation through an agreement with the French Development Agency (AFD);
- Defence cooperation between France and the Office of the Prime Minister of Mauritius;
- Environmental initiatives, including the provision of an environmental calculation tool by ADEME;
- Architectural heritage, facilitated by a letter of intent for Franco-Mauritian cooperation.
Additionally, a protocol agreement between Les Moulins de La Concorde and Soufflet Négoce, part of the InVivo Group, concerning wheat supply, will also be signed on the sidelines of this official visit.
This visit heralds a new era of partnership and collaboration, underscoring the enduring ties that bind France and Mauritius in their shared pursuit of progress and prosperity.
