72-Yr-Old Scammed: Rs 287,700 Lost to Fake British Doctor False Promises

A 72-year-old retiree from La Gaulette has reported to the police that she had fallen victim to a cunning scam orchestrated by an individual masquerading as a British doctor.

A month ago, the elderly woman had created a Facebook account, where she unwittingly accepted a friend request from the alleged charlatan, who claimed to be a medical professional from the UK.

According to Le Mauricien newspaper, their correspondence quickly transitioned to WhatsApp, where the faux-British conman, utilising a local phone number, allegedly wove a web of false promises.

Scam and Prospect of Gifts

He is alleged to have tantalised the septuagenarian with the prospect of gifts, but insisted that she must first arrange for the payment of a fictitious postage fee to Mauritius.

Between the 24th and 26th of March, the unsuspecting retiree made several money transfers, believing she was covering the costs for a non-existent parcel.

In total, she parted with a staggering Rs 287,700.

As the days passed without any sign of the promised delivery, the grim reality began to dawn upon her.

The conman had deactivated his Facebook account.
