After a failed attempt in 2024 under the previous government, the new “Changement” administration intends to soon introduce a new biometric passport with advanced encryption and anti-forgery features.

Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam announced this at the National Assembly on Tuesday, April 15, during the Prime Minister’s Question Time (PMQT) in response to a question from MP Ludovic Caserne.

E-Passport

These “e-Passports,” explained the Prime Minister, will include biometric data to make it easier to verify the identity of the passport holder, reduce the risk of fraud, and speed up immigration processes. They may also lead to visa exemptions for several countries.

The Prime Minister’s office is currently working with the Ministry of Information Technology, Communication, and Innovation on the technical specifications.

Ramgoolam emphasized that a previous attempt was made to introduce such a passport, but he felt it seemed “very suspicious.
