Ex-SST Jagai's Nephew Arrested with 24.85g of Cannabis

Shankursing Jagai, 38, was arrested on April 12 by the Eastern division of the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU) for possession of 24.85 grams of cannabis. He was taken into custody at the Moka Detention Centre on charges of “possession of cannabis for the purpose of distribution.”

ADSU officers searched Shankursing’s home at Block B 20, Résidence CHA, Montagne-Blanche, where they found 16 plastic sachets, each containing cannabis, along with an additional plastic bag. The total estimated value of the seized cannabis is Rs 28,000.

This incident brings back the name Jagai into the news, related to the former head of the now-disbanded Special Striking Team (SST), Ashik Jagai, who has faced numerous accusations, including “drug planting” and money laundering. The SST was dismantled by the new government post the general elections last November.

The controversy surrounding Ashik Jagai has been fueled by claims from individuals like activist Bruneau Laurette, and the case of Vimen Sabapati, who accused the SST of misconduct after being arrested with 10 kilograms of a substance believed to be heroin.

In March, a former Woman Police Constable (WPC) from the SST, Goomanee, revealed discrepancies regarding Sabapati’s arrest, claiming that a black bag presented during the arrest felt lighter than it did later at the SST office.

Additionally, attorney Akil Bissessur has made allegations of money laundering against Ashik Jagai and former police commissioner Anil Kumar Dip at the Financial Crimes Commission.

Despite the mounting allegations, Ashik Jagai has maintained his innocence and has filed a complaint against both Vimen Sabapati and WPC Goomanee.
