2.4 Magnitude Quake Shakes Northern Réunion Island

On Monday evening, 14th April, a tremor measuring 2.4 on the Richter scale reverberated through the northern expanse of La Réunion. The seismic event struck at precisely 20:04, as reported by the Volcanological Observatory of Piton de la Fournaise (OVPF). The tremor, lasting but a few fleeting seconds, was felt across various locales, including Sainte-Clotilde, La Montagne, La Bretagne, Marla, and Salazie.
In the wake of the incident, a deluge of accounts flooded social media, with numerous individuals recounting their experiences of the subtle shake.
Preliminary analyses have pinpointed the epicentre of the quake to be situated 7 kilometres south-west of Sainte-Clotilde, at a depth of 11 kilometres.
Shortly thereafter, at 20:12, a minor aftershock of 1.9 magnitude was recorded in the same vicinity.
The OVPF has emphasised that such occurrences are not uncommon in this region, with several similar tremors having been documented throughout the year, including one on 7th March that registered a magnitude of 1.8.
Further analyses are currently underway to refine the data concerning the location and intensity of these seismic events, as the island remains vigilant in the face of nature’s unpredictable forces.
