Judicial Inquiry Uncovers Medical Nightmares Behind Victim’s Untimely Death

The judicial inquiry into the untimely death of David Gaiqui has unveiled harrowing medical revelations. Dr Sudesh Kumar Gungadin, the head of the forensic department, took the stand on Monday, 7th April 2025, at the Port-Louis court, shedding light on the circumstances surrounding the demise of the Pailles resident.
David Gaiqui was discovered lifeless on 10th May 2020, in the car park of Dr A. G. Jeetoo Hospital.
Dr Gungadin, who conducted the autopsy, disclosed that Gaiqui’s heart was hypertrophied, weighing 430 grams—one and a half times less the normal weight for a man.
More alarmingly, the left coronary artery was found to be completely obstructed.
Victim’s Cardiac Issues
The forensic expert revealed that Gaiqui had a history of cardiac issues, having suffered a myocardial infarction long before his death, a fact he was likely unaware of.
“The patient had a previous heart attack which he suffered well before. Therefore, he was already living with a heart attack without even knowing he had it,” Dr Gungadin explained with palpable gravity as he addressed the court.
The inquiry further established that the coronary thrombosis leading to Gaiqui’s death was not the result of external factors but rather stemmed from his overall health condition.
When questioned by Me Muhummud Dzedhaan Bhatoo, Principal State Counsel, regarding the facial injuries observed on the deceased, Dr Gungadin clarified that these abrasions occurred when Gaiqui collapsed upon entering the hospital.
In a poignant detail, it was revealed that just a week prior to his death, Gaiqui had sought treatment at the same hospital for an abscess on his left leg.
This revelation adds a layer of complexity to an already troubling narrative, as the circumstances surrounding his death had raised numerous questions at the time, given the murky context in which his body was found.
