Launched in July 2024, the Equal Chance Allowance has delivered crucial financial support to thousands of Mauritian families. According to the latest statistics from the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA), an impressive 7,740 households have benefitted from this initiative, with a total disbursement of Rs 104,592,000 from 2024/25.

Since the programme began making payments in November 2024, approximately 7,000 households registered with the MRA have made use of the Equal Chance Allowance.

Its goal is to address inequalities by directly assisting the island’s most vulnerable households.

Eligible families receive a monthly grant of Rs 2,000, which will be issued from July 2024 to June 2025, specifically targeting those with a total monthly income not exceeding Rs 20,000.

To qualify, an adult member of the household must submit an application, ensuring that the collective income of all household members remains below this threshold.

The income considered includes wages, net earnings from businesses, social assistance, pensions, and any contributions received under the Social Contributions and Social Benefits Act.

The payments have unfolded as follows:

  • November 2024: The first round of payments, covering the months of July, August, and September 2024, reached about 3,200 families, amounting to Rs 19,524,000.
  • December 2024: The second disbursement for October 2024 saw approximately 3,473 recipients, totalling Rs 6,946,000.
  • February 2025: The most recent payment provided support to nearly 6,000 households, with total payments of Rs 46,462,000. This included allocations for 3,000 new beneficiaries from the months of July through October 2024.

The final payment of the Equal Chance Allowance is expected in June of this year, concluding a programme that has brought hope and essential financial assistance to many families facing hardship in Mauritius.

The significance of this initiative cannot be overstated; it represents a step forward in fostering social equity on the island.
