APPRENDRE Programme Launch: PTA 2 Project Takes Flight with AFD’s Support

A landmark occasion unfolded in Port-Louis on Thursday, 20th March, with the official launch of the APPRENDRE Programme—Project PTA 2. This ambitious initiative, designed to enrich teaching and learning practices, is spearheaded by the Agence universitaire de la francophonie (AUF) and supported through funding from the Agence française de développement (AFD).
Among the attendees were Laetitia Habchi, the Director of the AFD Office for Mauritius and Seychelles, Ricaud Auckbur, Chief Technical Officer of the Ministry of Education and Human Resources, and Soobeeraj Parmessa, the programme’s focal point.
The event also saw a gathering of numerous teachers and school directors, all eager to be part of this significant occasion.
The Ministry of Education plays a crucial role in this transformative project in Mauritius, which also receives valuable support from the French Embassy and the Mauritius Institute of Education (MIE).
Since its inception in 2018 across francophone African nations, the APPRENDRE programme has focused on enhancing the professional development of teachers, a vital element in striving for improved educational quality.
Currently active in 26 countries across Africa, this programme assists education ministries in their endeavours to elevate both teaching standards and the overall learning experience within primary education.
During her speech, Laetitia Habchi highlighted the indispensable role of education in addressing the challenges faced in today’s world.
She remarked, “The issues we confront necessitate a careful reconsideration of our priorities.
In this dynamic landscape, education and lifelong learning emerge as key drivers in building societies that are fairer, more resilient, and more compassionate.
This is why AFD has prioritised access to quality education as a cornerstone of its initiatives.”
Vèle Putchay, project coordinator and Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at MGI, elaborated on the transition from the first to the second action plan.
He stated, “Today, we unveil PTA 2, which will now encompass teachers in both primary and secondary schools.
The initial plan primarily focused on training officials within the Ministry of Education, who would then pass on their knowledge to other teachers.
Now, we will implement all the groundwork laid during 2023 and 2024 with direct involvement from the teachers themselves.
Small groups will be formed to tackle specific themes, which they will then apply within their classrooms.
Our ultimate goal is to enhance both teaching methods and learning outcomes.”
As the APPRENDRE programme begins its journey, it stands as a beacon of hope for educators and students, heralding a future filled with improved educational opportunities.
