In a determined effort to combat the rising issue of fare evasion, Osman Mahomed, the Minister of Land Transport, visited the Rose-Hill Metro station this Wednesday 26th March morning. During this important visit, he announced the launch of a new awareness campaign, “To Frode, To Tase,” aiming to address the problem of passengers travelling without a valid ticket or MECARD.

Minister Mahomed stressed the vital rule governing the Metro Express: “The most essential rule is to always have a valid ticket or MECARD when you travel.”

His message resonated throughout the busy station, reminding commuters of their responsibilities.

Turning to the dire financial situation of the Metro Express, the Minister shared that the system is grappling with a significant annual deficit of around Rs 300 million.

“For the last three years, the metro has operated without fare increases,” he noted, highlighting the urgent need for strategies to rectify this financial imbalance.

Furthermore, Minister Mahomed underscored the critical importance of safety within the trains and at the stations.

He assured the public that a range of control measures and awareness campaigns would be introduced to guarantee a reliable and sustainable service for all users.

As this campaign progresses, the Minister’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of the Metro Express is evident.

Through these initiatives, there is hope that passengers will understand the importance of adhering to the rules, ultimately fostering a successful future for public transport in Mauritius.
