Fines Up to Rs20 000 Coming to Protect Consumers in Mauritius

Beginning on 31 March 2025, a new wave of sanctions will be implemented to enhance consumer protection in Mauritius. The Ministry of Commerce and Consumer Protection has revealed an extensive revision of fines associated with breaches of pricing transparency laws.

Under these fresh regulations, retailers failing to properly display prices will face significantly harsher penalties. For up to five items without price tags, they could incur a fine of Rs 5,000.

This amount doubles to Rs 10,000 for six to ten unlabelled products and escalates to an Rs 20,000 for more than ten.

Other violations will also result in penalties. Charging prices higher than those legally established or displaying prices lower than those actually applied will lead to a Rs 5,000 fine.

Additionally, businesses caught using gas cylinders designated for domestic use in commercial settings or for non-domestic purposes will face penalties of Rs 10,000.

Should a retailer refuse to pay these fines, a notification will be sent via both postal service and registered mail, demonstrating the government’s commitment to strict enforcement of these rules.

The Ministry urges both consumers and retailers to review the details of the Consumer Protection (Fixed Penalty Notice) (Amendment) Regulations 2025, which are available on its official website.

This decisive action seeks not only to protect consumers but also to foster fairness in the marketplace.
