4-Month Course Boosts Women Entrepreneurs in Global Trade

17th March was pivotal in the quest to empower women entrepreneurs with the introduction of the ‘Trade Beyond Borders’ training programme. Initiated by the Economic Development Board (EDB), this initiative aims to equip women with the essential skills needed to navigate the intricate world of international trade. The event attracted notable figures, including junior minister Dhaneshwar Damry and Kate Chamley, the Australian High Commissioner to Mauritius, highlighting its significance.
Spanning four months, the programme offers eight intensive sessions that explore vital topics such as logistics management, trade regulations, digital marketing, and business development.
The primary objective is to enable women entrepreneurs to adeptly manage customs processes and meet the challenges of the global marketplace.
In his address, Dhaneshwar Damry pointed out that this training is specifically tailored for women-led businesses, aiming to provide them with the knowledge and skills necessary for successful international growth.
He emphasized the relevance of the initiative within the context of International Women’s Day, which advocates for equality and empowerment.
Damry drew attention to the urgent need for progress, noting that Mauritius currently ranks 107th out of 147 countries on the global gender gap index, a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges in promoting equality and inclusion.
He also mentioned the upcoming national budget, which will employ a performance-based approach to address social issues and ensure tangible outcomes.
“The government remains committed to fostering a more inclusive and competitive island,” he affirmed.
His comments extended to the recent state visit by Prime Minister Modi, celebrating the signing of a currency convertibility agreement for trade.
This critical development is set to lower business costs and create a more collaborative economic landscape.
He encouraged companies to increase their investments in innovation and research and development, emphasizing a proactive approach toward economic growth.
Sanjay Bhunjun, Chairman of the EDB, reminded attendees of the SheTrades initiative launched in 2024, aimed at providing women entrepreneurs with the crucial tools, networks, and opportunities necessary for success in global trade.
The SheTrades Mauritius Hub now comprises 223 members, including 145 businesses and 78 individual members—an encouraging indication of a growing community.
He also highlighted DHL’s GoTrade initiative, which advocates for inclusive and sustainable economic growth, in line with Sustainable Development Goal 8.
Bhunjun stressed the essential role of logistics in international trade—a critical aspect that enables businesses to effectively access global markets.
He underscored the need for women-led enterprises to develop the competencies required to navigate customs procedures and satisfy the demands of international buyers.
“This training programme will equip entrepreneurs for export, reduce risks, and refine their competitive positioning in the global arena,” he concluded.
In a rapidly evolving global marketplace, ‘Trade Beyond Borders’ offers a beacon of hope, illuminating the path for women entrepreneurs to establish their presence on the world stage.
