Municipal Elections: Date Set for 4th May

It has been officially announced, the next municipal elections will take place on 4th May. This significant declaration was made on 19th March by President Dharam Gokhool, who issued the “writ of elections,” detailing the electoral timeline for cities throughout the country.
Candidates will be able to register on 5th April, a day known as “Nomination Day.”
This forthcoming event follows an extensive hiatus since the last municipal elections held on 14th June 2015.
These elections have been postponed three times by the Militant Socialist Movement (MSM) government.
In both 2021 and 2022, then-Minister of Local Government, Anwar Husnoo, implemented regulations that permitted delays due to the ongoing impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic.
More recently, in 2023, former Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth suggested the need for reforms in local governance to justify yet another postponement.
As the country prepares for these elections, many citizens are eager to witness a vital step toward restoring local democracy, after years marked by delays and uncertainty.
