Breathtaking Marine Tornado Captivates Online Viewers

In the picturesque village of Grand-Sable, situated in the South-East, a local resident has captured stunning images of a marine tornado from her terrace. Intrigued by the spectacle, she climbed onto her rooftop to film the magnificent phenomenon.
“It all began with clouds swelling and expanding, descending towards the water. It ressembled a tornado taking shape,” she recounted, filled with awe.
But was it a tornado or a marine tornado? Yashvir Ramlukon, a meteorologist from the Vacoas Meteorological Service, shed light on this distinction: a tornado forms over land, whereas a marine tornado develops above the ocean.
“It is essentially a rotating column of warm air that materializes over a body of water.
Conditions that are warm, humid, and unstable in the atmosphere encourage the appearance of active clouds, which can evolve into cumulonimbus,” he elaborated.
At the base of this cumulonimbus, a funnel-shaped cloud emerges, widening as it touches the surface of the sea.
“This phenomenon can be perilous, as it is frequently accompanied by thunder and lightning. A marine tornado can last anywhere from 30 to 40 minutes,” cautioned the meteorologist.
However, unlike many other weather phenomena, a marine tornado is notoriously unpredictable, Yashvir Ramlukon emphasised. It can only be witnessed at the moment of its formation.
