SP Jagai Under Fire: IPCC Investigates Serious Claims Against SST
Police Superintendent (SP) Ashik Jagai has been summoned for questioning by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) in light of serious accusations directed at him and his team. After his interview, SP Jagai spoke to the media, firmly asserting his innocence. “I have nothing to hide,” he stated, labelling the allegations as “concocted tales.”
The controversy centres on former Woman Police Constable (WPC) Bandiny Mourandie-Goomanee, who was previously assigned to Jagai’s Special Striking Team (SST).
She has brought forth allegations concerning questionable tactics, including “drug planting,” employed by Jagai’s team—a revelation that has reverberated throughout the police community.
In response to these claims, SP Jagai recorded a “Precautionary Measure” at the St Pierre police station, claiming that it is a conspiracy to tarnish the reputation of the Special Striking Team.
As the situation develops, Jagai has indicated he may consider legal action in due course.
Significantly, in November 2024, just days following the general elections, the new Police Commissioner, Rampersad Sooroojbally, took the controversial step of disbanding the Special Striking Team.
The members of Jagai’s unit have since been reassigned to various divisions, with SP Jagai himself being transferred to the Eastern Division, raising questions about his future and the reputation of the SST.
