Mauritius Weather Alert: Heavy Rainfall & 3 to 4 Metre Swell Warning

The weather station has announced a severe weather alert for Mauritius, with heavy rainfall expected on 17 March from 10 AM to 10 PM.

Active cloud formations linked to an instability line are approaching the island from the south-west.

Moderate to heavy showers, along with thunderstorms, are set to begin this morning and will continue into the night.

There is a possibility of water accumulation in flood-prone areas, and visibility may drop significantly due to fog and persistent downpours in some regions.

Practical Advice:
In light of the anticipated heavy showers and thunderstorms, it is highly advisable to:

  1. Stay indoors and avoid open fields, hiking activities, and maritime excursions. Do not seek shelter under trees or any tall structures.
  2. Avoid areas prone to water accumulation.
  3. Exercise utmost caution while driving, as visibility may be severely impaired by heavy rain and fog.

Additionally, a high swell warning was issued at 4:30 AM on Monday, 17 March 2025, and will remain in effect from 10 AM today until 10 PM on Tuesday, 18 March 2025.

Swells of 3.5 to 4 metres are reaching the coast from the south-west, leading to strong to very strong sea conditions.

These swells may break over low-lying coastal regions, particularly on the west and south coasts, during high tide.

Authorities strongly recommend that fishermen, boaters, and the general public avoid going out to sea or attempting to visit these beaches during this dangerous period.
