In a pivotal advancement for local transport, the B103 Plaine-Champagne road, linking the famous Chamarel Rum Distillery to the Varangue-sur-Morne restaurant, has officially been reopened to traffic. This important milestone was celebrated with an inauguration ceremony that saw the presence of Ajay Gunness, the Minister of National Infrastructure, along with members of the National Assembly and various distinguished guests.

Minister Gunness voiced his contentment with the successful completion of the roadworks, assuring motorists that they will now experience a route that is “safer and more reliable.”

The government had undertaken this essential project following signs of distress and cracks along the road.

He underscored that this initiative is designed to improve “the safety of commuters and to ensure a more secure road network.”

According to the minister, this enhancement will not only benefit daily travellers but will also provide better access for pilgrims heading to Grand-Bassin from the western region.

Moreover, he pointed out that businesses affected by the road’s previous closure can once again operate fully.

Nonetheless, Minister Gunness urged drivers to use the newly upgraded road responsibly, highlighting the perils associated with reckless driving and rallying events.

He also cautioned about “dangerous turns” along the road that require heightened attention and caution.

This ambitious endeavour, with a budget of Rs 292 million, involved stabilising a one-kilometre section of the road.

The improved infrastructure boasts a ten-metre-wide carriageway, effective drainage systems, and 1.5-metre shoulders designed to enhance vehicle safety.

These upgrades are anticipated to make travel smoother for both residents and visitors eager to explore this scenic part of the country.
