Call to Commerce Ministry :Special Bread Prices Soar to Rs 75

In recent times, the prices of special breads have become a significant concern for consumers in Mauritius. While the prices of standard loaves and baguettes are regulated, many supermarkets are escalating their prices for what they classify as ‘special breads.’
A notable case is occurring at a well-known supermarket chain in Plaines-Wilhems, where the price of a packet of sliced brown bread has risen from Rs 45 two years ago to an alarming Rs 75.
Alongside this price hike, customers are receiving less bread, as both the weight and number of slices have been noticeably reduced.
This matter is surely worthy of the Minister of Commerce’s attention, especially as he is aiming to bring order to the consumer market.
The store has seen a surge in customers lately, likely due to the closure of a competing supermarket earlier this year.
However, the increase in foot traffic has led to long queues at the checkout, creating a more chaotic shopping experience.
Additionally, there are concerns about stray dogs being fed at the entrance, adding to the overall disorder.
Given these issues, a visit from Commerce and Health inspectors seems warranted to address pricing practices and the general customer experience.
Bread is an essential item, and consumers deserve fair prices and a better shopping environment.
