Labour Shortage: Reza Uteem Unveils New Measures amid Rising Demand

In a response to the ongoing crisis of labour shortages, Minister of Labour Reza Uteem has announced a series of measures aimed at addressing the pressing issue of migrant workers. This declaration was made during a Private Notice Question raised by the Leader of the Opposition, Joe Lesjongard.
In his address, Minister Uteem revealed the establishment of a ministerial committee tasked with finding viable solutions to this critical situation.
This committee comprises ministers from the realms of Social Security, Technology, and Industry.
Under Mr. Uteem’s leadership, multiple meetings have already been convened with union representatives and employers alike, laying the groundwork for forthcoming decisions that could change the landscape of the workforce.
The Minister also shed light on the development of a new software system that utilises artificial intelligence, designed to serve as a liaison between employers and job seekers.
“This will streamline the process for both parties,” Mr. Uteem emphasised, promising enhanced efficiency in job placements.
However, there remains a significant concern regarding training initiatives. Minister Uteem lamented that last year, the Mauritius Institute of Training and Development (MITD) managed to train only 88 individuals.
He expressed a fervent desire to rectify this shortfall, stating, “We must ensure that the courses provided align with the job opportunities available in the market.”
The Minister’s words resonated with urgency, as he pointed out the relentless surge in demand for foreign workers, which spans various sectors.
