Kistnen Case Reopens after 4 Years, Investigation with International Support

Over four years after the suspicious death of Soopramanien Kistnen, the investigation into this troubling affair has taken a significant new turn. Prime Minister Dr Navin Ramgoolam recently confirmed in Parliament that a special team from the Central Criminal Investigation Department (CCID) has been established to thoroughly revisit the investigation, now helmed by a newly appointed police commissioner.
Since the alarming report of Kistnen’s death in October 2020, a staggering 98 individuals have been interviewed, including former Commerce Minister Yogida Sawmynaden.
An initial judicial inquiry was launched, and its findings—delivered to the Director of Public Prosecutions in November 2021—strongly condemned the handling of the case by the police and medical services.
The report described the response as exhibiting “an unprecedented level of incompetence,” and highlighted a blatant attempt to manipulate the facts surrounding the incident.
The post-mortem examination that concluded Kistnen’s death was a suicide is now under scrutiny, with the presiding magistrate pointing to evidence suggesting the possibility of a disguised homicide.
Today, however, the investigation is reigniting with renewed vigour.
An experienced former police officer with expertise in criminal matters has been appointed as an advisor to the CCID, aiming to enhance the quality of the investigation.
The government is also seeking support from international agencies to shed light on this sensitive case, as well as other unresolved matters.
Prime Minister Dr Navin Ramgoolam has reiterated his dissatisfaction with the initial management of this inquiry and has vowed that the truth will be pursued relentlessly, ensuring that justice is served not only for the family of Soopramanien Kistnen but for the entire nation.
