MSM’s First Press Conference Since Election Loss: Tension Runs High

On the afternoon of Monday, March 3rd, Joe Lesjongard, the president of the MSM (Mouvement Socialiste Militant), held a press conference at the Sun Trust, the party’s headquarters, where he spoke against the recent arrest of former Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth. Lesjongard called the arrest a “carefully planned political scheme.”
This press conference, which had support from many MSM members, was the first since their 60-0 debacle in the November 2010 elections. Pravind Jugnauth was not present at the important event, which pushed Lesjongard, who is currently the Leader of the Opposition, into the spotlight.
Lesjongard spoke about the possibility of more arrests within the party, suggesting that there was a threat hanging over them.
On Saturday, February 15th, just five days after changes to the Financial Crimes Commission (FCC) Act were made, Jugnauth was arrested under accusations of money laundering.
This followed the shocking seizure of over Rs 114 million and valuable items from businessman Josian Deelawon and his accountant, Chadradeo Nitish Oomah, raising serious questions about the honesty of politics in the area.
As the press conference went on, it became clear that the atmosphere was filled with tension and uncertainty, reflecting the difficult times the MSM was facing.
