The fate of Sergeant Arnasala hangs in the balance as he faces serious charges amounting to a staggering Rs 1.6 million in theft from Iqbal Ramchurn, a local farmer. During an afternoon hearing at the Pamplemousses court on Monday, 3rd March, the police officer’s request for bail was emphatically denied.

The sergeant, who previously served as the head of the Divisional Crime Intelligence Unit (DCIU) for the Northern Division, stands accused of “public official using office for gratification.”

However, the court’s decision to refuse his release was driven by grave concerns over ‘tampering with evidence’ and ‘interfering with witnesses’—serious allegations indeed.

Represented by his lawyer, Me Yash Bhadain, the sergeant made a formal motion seeking bail, a discussion that is set to be heard on Thursday, 6th March.

Meanwhile, he has been remanded back to the Financial Crimes Commission for further questioning following his arrest just this morning, upon his arrival at Plaisance Airport.

This case has escalated dramatically since the alleged incident in July 2024, when Sergeant Arnasala, alongside four other officers, reportedly threatened and extorted Rs 1.6 million from Ramchurn during a police raid in Fond-du-Sac.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the implications of this case resonate across the community, bringing to light the pressing issues of corruption and trust within those sworn to protect and serve.
