PM: Stricter Laws Against Impaired Driving Incidents, Car will be Seized

In a striking call for action, the Prime Minister has advocated for the seizure of vehicles from those found to be driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. This firm stance came in the wake of a tragic incident that unfolded in D’Épinay, where three dedicated volunteers, who were distributing food to pilgrims, were violently struck by a vehicle driven by someone who, as reported by the police, was under the influence of harmful substances and had been banned from driving since 2017.

This poignant backdrop led Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam and his wife, Veena, to reflect solemnly during the Maha Shivaratri celebrations.

The couple attended prayers at the Maheswarnath temple in Triolet, a sacred place to which the Prime Minister has strong ties.

He recalled having paid his respects there just a day before the dissolution of Parliament.

In a heartfelt expression of outrage regarding the D’Épinay accident, Ramgoolam was candid about the inadequacies of the current system.

“How can the police apprehend someone in such a state, only to release them after a few days?

This is simply not acceptable,” he asserted passionately.

“Their vehicle must be seized, and we must make changes to the law.”

The Prime Minister’s declarations signal a determined push towards tighter regulations aimed at tackling this urgent issue, reinforcing his commitment to public safety and the rule of law.
