Cyclone Garance Alert 3: The Tempest Approaches – Stay Alert, Mauritius!

A Cyclone Warning Class III still in effect for Mauritius as we brace ourselves for the impending impact of Cyclone Garance. This is the seventeenth bulletin related to this severe weather event, released at 16:10 hours on Thursday, 27 February 2025.
Latest analyses from satellite and radar imagery revealed that Cyclone Garance remains an intense tropical system, with its small but mighty core generating gusts exceeding a staggering 250 km/h close to its centre.
As of 16:00 hours, Garance was positioned approximately 275 km north-west of Mauritius, at latitude 18.6 degrees south and longitude 55.3 degrees east.
In a worrying development, it has begun a slow movement towards the south at a speed of 8 km/h, with numerical models consistently indicating that it will continue to approach our shores.
This cyclone poses a significant threat to the island, and severe cyclonic conditions may be experienced overnight.
The public is urged to exercise extreme caution.
Active cloud bands associated with Garance are already affecting our weather, bringing moderate to heavy showers, accompanied by thunderstorms.
These downpours are likely to lead to water accumulation and flooding in various areas.
During this time of peril, we implore the public to adhere to the following safety measures:
- Stay in secure locations and avoid taking shelter beneath trees during thunderstorms.
- Steer clear of areas prone to flooding, including riverbanks and slopes susceptible to landslides.
- Exercise great caution while navigating roads, as visibility is expected to deteriorate due to heavy rain and fog.
Additionally, winds are anticipated from the north-east at approximately 40 km/h, with gusts soaring to around 100 km/h as conditions intensify.
The sea is expected to be very rough, with swells reaching heights of 5 to 7 metres.
The dangerous storm surge may lead to coastal inundation along the northern and western coasts, making it imperative for the public to avoid venturing into the sea or along our beaches.
As a reminder, a Cyclone Warning Class III is currently in effect for Mauritius.
Next MMS bulletin scheduled for release at approximately 19:10 hours.
Please stay vigilant and prioritise your safety.
