Cyclone Warning Class 3 Issued in Mauritius as Severe Tropical Storm Garance Intensifies

Mauritius is bracing for severe weather as a Class III cyclone warning has been officially issued by the Mauritius Meteorological Services following the release of its ninth cyclone bulletin at 4:10 PM on Wednesday, February 26, 2025.

Current analysis of satellite images shows that Severe Tropical Storm Garance is gaining strength and is on the verge of reaching tropical cyclone intensity in the next few hours. As of 4:00 PM, Garance was located approximately 440 kilometers northwest of Mauritius, with coordinates of 17.6 degrees south and 54.3 degrees east, moving eastward at a speed of about 12 kilometers per hour.

Meteorological models indicate that the environmental conditions surrounding Garance are favorable for further intensification. Experts predict that the storm will take a southward trajectory, posing an increasing threat as it approaches the island nation.

The cyclone poses a direct risk to Mauritius, and the public is urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions as the storm’s cloud bands are expected to influence the island starting tonight. Residents should prepare for cloudy weather accompanied by moderate to heavy showers, as well as isolated thunderstorms. Authorities warn that this heavy rainfall may lead to water accumulation and localized flooding.

Preparing For The Cyclone

In light of these developments, officials advise the public to follow safety measures, including:

  1. * Staying in safe locations and avoiding shelter under trees during thunderstorms.
  2. * Steering clear of areas prone to water accumulation, riverbanks, and other waterways that could flood, as well as certain mountain slopes vulnerable to landslides.
  3. * Exercising caution when traveling, as heavy rain and fog conditions are likely to reduce visibility on the roads.

Winds associated with the storm are anticipated to blow from the northeast at approximately 25 kilometers per hour, with gusts reaching around 70 kilometers per hour. These winds are expected to strengthen starting early Thursday morning.

The sea is forecasted to be rough to very rough, with substantial swells, leading authorities to caution against venturing out to sea during this critical period.

The next update is scheduled for approximately 7:10 PM. Residents are encouraged to stay tuned to official channels for the latest information and guidance.
