Arvind Bundhun, the former director of the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA), finds himself in hot water as the Financial Crimes Commission (FCC) prepares to investigate a complaint lodged last week. He stands accused of misusing a MTPA credit card for personal purchases—a serious allegation that has raised many eyebrows.

Reports indicated that these questionable expenses occurred between 2018 and 2024, notably in Duty Free shops both in Mauritius and abroad, amounting to an estimated Rs 500,000.

The FCC has been presented with compelling documentation that could potentially lead to serious repercussions for Bundhun as they conduct a preliminary investigation.

If the evidence collected proves substantial, he may soon be called upon to explain his actions regarding these troubling claims.

Adding fuel to the fire, it has emerged that Bundhun allegedly received per diem payments for his trips abroad.

Between July 2023 and November 2024, he purportedly pocketed a staggering total of $47,000—nearly Rs 2.2 million.

Per diems are intended to cover essential travel expenses such as meals, accommodation, and other related costs.

The investigation is ongoing, with further developments expected in the coming days.

In early January, Tourism Minister Richard Duval vocally condemned these practices, claiming they have persisted for the last six years.

Particular scrutiny has fallen on one hotel establishment, whose manager reportedly secured advantages to promote Mauritius on the international stage, only to use these resources for personal gain to highlight his own business.

This manager is also said to have received payment from the MTPA. As more abuses come to light, the situation remains fraught with tension and intrigue.
