Investigators Scrutinise Jugnauth’s Laptop as Money Laundering Probe Deepens

Investigators are meticulously scrutinising the laptop of Pravind Jugnauth as part of their ongoing probe into a suspected money laundering scandal involving a staggering sum of Rs 113.8 million, allegedly linked to the Jugnauth couple. On Monday – 24th February, a significant phase of the investigation began as they delved into the data stored on the former Prime Minister’s laptop.
This intensive investigation followed a search conducted on Saturday, 15th February, at the former leader’s residence on Angus Road, where officials from the Financial Crime Commission (FCC) seized numerous electronic devices, including a laptop, an iPad, and a mobile phone.
Regarded as vital evidence in the case, these devices are currently undergoing forensic examination to extract potentially crucial information.
The investigators are hopeful that the digital data will reveal correspondence between the former Prime Minister and various key figures involved in the case, which could shed light on the origins and destinations of the alleged tainted funds.
Pravind Jugnauth has categorically denied the charges against him, asserting that they are baseless and part of a political strategy aimed at damaging his reputation.
In his testimony to the investigators, he did acknowledge his acquaintance with businessman Josian Deelawon, whom he described as a supporter of the Militant Socialist Movement.
However, he firmly rejected claims that he handed over bags filled with cash and luxury watches to Deelawon.
On the other hand, Deelawon, who runs My Holidays, presented a starkly different narrative.
He claimed that he received these bags through Devianee Ramchurn, the interim mayor of Vacoas/Phoenix, insisting that they contained funds from legitimate donations.
The digital evidence contained on the former government leader’s laptop is expected to provide vital answers, while the previously cloned mobile phone and iPad belonging to Kobita Jugnauth have already undergone examination earlier in the investigation.
Experts are continuing their analysis of the financial connections among several key players in this troubling case.
