Class 2 Cyclone Warning Issued for Mauritius as Storm Intensifies

A Class 2 cyclone warning is now in effect for Mauritius, as declared in the third cyclone bulletin issued at 4:10 a.m. on Tuesday, 25th February 2025. The latest satellite images revealed that the tropical disturbance has intensified overnight into a tropical depression. As of 4:00 a.m., this depression was positioned approximately 630 kilometres west-northwest of Mauritius, at a latitude of 18.3 degrees south and longitude of 51.8 degrees east. It continues to move slowly eastwards.
Data from available numerical models indicate that environmental conditions remain favourable for further intensification of this system.
The tropical depression is expected to curve southward in the near future.
Should this projected path hold, it will draw closer to Mauritius while gradually intensifying into a moderate tropical storm, thus posing a potential threat to the island.
Authorities are urging the public in Mauritius to complete necessary safety precautions.
As the day progresses, bands of clouds associated with the tropical system are expected to cross the island, bringing about predominantly cloudy weather with the potential for isolated, moderate showers and the risk of thunderstorms this evening.
Additionally, pockets of fog will likely form, particularly in higher regions.
The winds are forecast to blow from the east-north-east at approximately 25 km/h, gradually strengthening, with gusts reaching around 60 km/h.
Seas will be rough beyond the reefs, with significant swells.
Therefore, it is strongly advised to refrain from venturing out to sea. The next bulletin will be issued at approximately 10:10 a.m.
