In a harrowing accident that has shocked the community of D’Épinay, five people, including three women were injured on 25 February in a violent road accident. The collision occurred around 9 a.m. when they were struck by a car while serving food to pilgrims returning from Grand-Bassin for Maha Shivaratree.
The condition of one of the women has been deemed critical, raising alarm among authorities and locals alike.
The Police Press Office has confirmed the worrying state of her health.
A video circulating on social media captures the moment of impact. One of the injured remains in serious condition.
Meanwhile, the driver of the vehicle, 47-year-old Dumeshwar Sharma Ramnarain, who also sustained injuries, has been taken to SSRN hospital for treatment and is currently undergoing a series of medical tests.
During a search in the car, officers discovered a hand-rolled cigarette with one end burned, which is suspected to contain illegal substances. The search extended to the vehicle’s trunk, where a labeled blue bag was found.
Inside, investigators uncovered five sealed boxes, colored black and yellow, believed to contain illicit substances. Four additional similar boxes, which were not sealed, contained red packages with a suspicious reddish substance.
All items have been seized and taken to the local police station for further investigation.
Minister of Local Government Ranjiv Woochit visited the hospital and reported that a breathalyser test administered to the driver returned a negative result, dispelling initial concerns regarding alcohol consumption.
According to reports, the driving license of the driver had allegedly been revoked by a Court eight years ago.
