India-Mauritius: Strengthened Cooperation Between 2 Chambers of Commerce

On Friday 14th February, the Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) welcomed a visiting delegation from the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). This influential business organisation represents over 9,000 leading Indian companies and boasts an impressive network of 300,000 indirect members across various sectors, including manufacturing, banking, finance, and technology.

The delegation was graciously received by Drishtysingh Ramdenee, Secretary General of the MCCI, alongside the management team and various members of the chamber.

Leading the visiting group was Ramesh Mutha, CEO of Mohan Mutha Exports, accompanied by key CII representatives, Aditya Ghosh, Director – International (Africa), and Akshay Kumar, Executive – International (Africa).

Notably, the delegation included directors and board chairpersons from major Indian companies such as Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, an international pharmaceutical powerhouse operating in over 100 countries; Telecommunications Consultants India Limited (TCIL), a key player in telecommunications infrastructure; and Nucleus Software Solutions, a respected name in technology solutions development.

“The Comprehensive Economic Cooperation and Partnership Agreement (CECPA) opens new avenues for Indo-Mauritian economic relations.

The MCCI, through high-level meetings like this one and our Joint Business Council with the CII, established in 1995, plays a pivotal role in realising the opportunities presented by this agreement.

Our ability to bring together economic decision-makers from both countries, as evidenced by today’s gathering, is crucial for transforming this legal framework into tangible business partnerships,” Drishtysingh Ramdenee emphasised.

Mauritian business figures from various sectors participated in these discussions, including Charan Dabeesing, CEO of Mauritius Automated Clearing and Settlement System (MACSS), and Rajnish Hawabhay, CEO of Mauritius Network Services Ltd (MNS).

Aditya Ghosh highlighted the potential for regional collaboration.

“The CII, which unites the largest industrial groups in India, is set to host its next Africa Growth Conclave in August 2025.

Mauritius is invited to send a high-level delegation. The presence of Mauritian CEOs alongside 300 Indian companies at the Conclave will create significant synergies within our African strategy.”

Ramesh Mutha added, “Mauritius offers a sophisticated business environment, characterised by regulatory finesse and multi-sector expertise.

This presents concrete opportunities for Indian companies, particularly in financial services, IT, and pharmaceuticals.

The CECPA now provides a structured framework to enhance these collaborations.”

This high-level meeting reiterates the MCCI’s unique position as a key facilitator in fostering regional and international business relations.

With a network of seven Joint Business Councils formed with strategic partners, including the CII since 1995 and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry since 1985, the MCCI remains a vital interlocutor for promoting Indo-Mauritian trade relationships.

These strategic partnerships have enabled Mauritius to engage in the B20 India forum, the official G20 business engagement platform, in 2023.

Discussions on Friday underscored the need to bolster Indian investments in Mauritius, particularly within financial services, information technology, and the pharmaceutical industry.

The MCCI and the CII have agreed to intensify their interactions through regular meetings of their Joint Business Council, focusing particularly on implementing the CECPA.

This reinforced collaboration aims to enhance investment flows between the two nations and position Mauritius as a preferred hub for the expansion of Indian businesses across Africa.
