Mauritius Met Station Issues Alert: Expect Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms

The Vacoas Meteorological Station has issued a warning regarding a significant deterioration in weather conditions expected over the next few days in Mauritius. Starting Saturday, February 22, the island will experience a monsoonal invasion, leading to increased humidity and instability. This change is likely to result in the formation of heavy cloud cover.

Adding to the concern, meteorologists are monitoring the potential development of a low-pressure system, which could exacerbate the already unstable weather starting early next week.

Beginning Friday evening, sporadic showers are anticipated, continuing through Saturday. By Sunday, February 23, rain is expected to intensify, with increased frequency and strength, potentially resulting in isolated thunderstorms across the region.

Additionally, an encroaching fog, particularly in higher elevations, may severely reduce visibility, posing risks for those traveling.

Experts predict a notable increase in adverse weather by Monday, February 24, with rainfall expected to persist until at least Wednesday, February 26.

Winds will initially come from the north at around 30 km/h on Sunday, but gusts could escalate significantly, reaching up to 80 km/h as the week progresses.

In response to these warnings, the Meteorological Station urges the public to take immediate precautions:

  • Stay in secure locations and avoid exposed areas, maritime activities, and unstable shelters during thunderstorms.
  • Avoid regions prone to flooding.
  • Exercise extreme caution while driving, as both heavy rain and fog may significantly impair visibility.

As the severe weather approaches, it is vital to heed these warnings to ensure safety and preparedness.
