Five years after the death of Pravin Kanakiah, a former Government Procurement Officer , new developments have emerged in his case. Kanakiah was found dead on December 11, 2020, in the area known as La-Roche-Qui-Pleure, near Souillac.

Dr. Sudesh Kumar Gungadin, the head of the police’s forensic department, is the key witness in the case. He testified in Souillac court on February 19, 2025, and revealed that Kanakiah was dead before his body entered the water.

This statement has raised more questions about the circumstances surrounding Kanakiah’s death. The Procurement Officer at the Ministry of Finance was only 38 years old when his body was discovered in a picturesque coastal area.

An autopsy conducted on the day his body was found showed he had multiple injuries, including wounds to his head, arms, and abdomen. Dr. Gungadin detailed these findings while being questioned by Damodarsingh Bissessur, Senior State Counsel from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

“The majority of the injuries,” the doctor stated, “were ante-mortem – inflicted before death.

Some were delivered just moments before his passing, while others were post-mortem.”

The official cause of death was attributed to a “traumatic subarachnoid haemorrhage” to the head.

The doctor’s testimony painted a grim picture, leaving the court to consider the possibility of a violent act.

Adding another layer of complexity, the court also heard from Outham Appadoo, the brother-in-law of the deceased.

Mr. Appadoo vehemently denied earlier reports of suggesting suicide to the police.

In July 2024, the Acting Principal Government Analyst Prakash Nirmal Babeea testified before the Souillac Court that that 23 of the 196 files handled by Kanakiah had gone missing.

As the investigation continues to twist and turn, Magistrate Ameerah Dhunnoo has adjourned the proceedings until the 21st of March, 2025.
