STC Under Fire: Urgent Action Needed on Rice Quality

Whispers of inferior rice, a broken grain and suspect texture, have grown into a chorus of complaints, echoing from kitchen tables across the land. The State Trading Corporation (STC) finds itself in the eye of a gathering storm.
After numerous complaints, the STC is re-examining its quality control measures.
The corporation insisted that the rice ration must be of superior quality.
Following complaints about its texture and high breakage rate, concrete measures will be taken to ensure a better rice ration.
This initiative is in response to consumer complaints about an excessive breakage rate, which affects the product’s texture and quality.
The rice ration, also known as ‘Long Grain White Rice’, is a staple food for many households.
Since its creation in 1982, the STC has been responsible for importing and distributing it. Although efforts have been made to reduce the breakage rate, recent consumer complaints highlight the need for increased vigilance.
A Pledge of Vigilance, a Promise of Change.
The STC will apply strict directives to its officers and relevant departments to ensure that the imported rice meets the highest standards.
A close collaboration with international suppliers will enable a rigorous selection process to eliminate impurities.
Additionally, the STC plans to improve the storage conditions in its warehouses.
Enhanced sanitary measures will be taken to prevent contamination and preserve the freshness of the product until it reaches the retailers.
The goal is to deliver a rice ration that meets the nation’s quality standards.
The Stain of Infestation
Recently, in May 2023, agents from the Ministry of Agro-Industry’s entomology department were called to the STC’s warehouse.
They discovered bags of 25kg of rice infested with weevils, commonly known as “gon”.
This discovery is believed to be caused by recent bad weather affecting the warehouse, which is located in a port area.
Even three weeks after the discovery, employees at the warehouse detected the presence of weevils in the rice bags.
The STC immediately alerted the authorities, and a joint operation was conducted between the STC and the Ministry of Agro-Industry to ensure consumer safety.
Looking to the Future
In the coming week, a delegation from the Ministry of Commerce will travel to Dubai to attend a « Food Expo » international.
This visit aiming to explore new opportunities for importing consumer products from the United Arab Emirates.
