February 15th, A dramatic day has unfolded in Mauritius, casting a long shadow of suspicion over the highest echelons of power. Kobita Jugnauth, wife of former Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth, has been permitted to leave the Financial Crimes Commission (FCC) headquarters in Réduit after a gruelling three-hour interrogation. The focus of the investigation? Alleged money laundering.

The events began in a blaze of intrigue on Saturday, 15 February, with the arrest of two key figures from the MyGroup conglomerate:

Josian Deelawon, the Chief Executive Officer of My Holidays Ltd and the head of the MyGroup, a vast Mauritian business empire involved primarily in real estate and tourism,

And Chandradeo Nitish Oomah, the Chief Financial Officer of both My Holidays Ltd and MyGroup.

The arrest followed a sensational seizure – several suitcases of cash. The exact sum remained undisclosed, but the implications are clear.

Adding further intrigue, the investigation took a particularly personal turn.

Inside Oomah’s residence in Pointe-aux-Canonniers, authorities discovered a treasure trove of evidence.

This included foreign currency – dollars, euros, francs, pounds sterling, rands, dirhams – along with luxury watches, hotel receipts from abroad, and travel documents bearing the name of Kobita Jugnauth herself.

The connection, if any, is yet to be revealed, but the links are certainly undeniable.

In an act that underscored the gravity of the situation, the FCC wasted no time in issuing a directive to the Commissioner of Police and the Director-General of the Passport and Immigration Office.

The directive, which was issued on the same day as the arrests, called for immediate notification should Pravind Jugnauth, his wife Kobita Jugnauth, her brother Sanjiv Ramdanee, or Basoodeo Seetaram, a director of several companies and a figure with close ties to the former government, attempt to leave the country.

The investigation swiftly escalated, culminating in a raid on the former Prime Minister’s residence on Angus Road, Vacoas.

Both Pravind Jugnauth and his wife Kobita were then summoned to the FCC headquarters in Réduit, where they were questioned.

While Kobita Jugnauth was later authorised to leave, questions remain. At 11:15 PM, Pravind Jugnauth was still being questioned.

The silence from within the FCC is deafening. The nation holds its breath, awaiting the next chapter in this unfolding financial saga.
