Minister Patrick Assirvaden has issued a stark warning about the desperate situation facing the nation’s water supply. The very foundations of the country’s infrastructure are under threat, he warned, as reservoirs and rivers dry up at an alarming rate.

“Our reservoirs and rivers are withering away,” the Minister of Public Services said in a sombre statement. “It is a situation that is becoming increasingly alarming and disturbing. We are left with the only remaining option: tapping into our underground aquifers.”

The Minister spoke after attending the launch of a new groundwater exploitation project at Fond-du-Sac, a stark reminder of the measures being taken to combat the drought.

The situation has been brought to the attention of the Council of Ministers, who were informed of the gravity of the situation and the need for “drastic measures” to address the crisis.

In a major initiative, the Ministry, the Central Water Authority (CWA) and the Water Resources Commission are examining a total of 174 underground aquifers.

Additionally, mini-reservoirs have been installed on 12 sites across the country in a bid to supplement the dwindling water supply.
