Milan Meetarbhan Appointed Permanent Representative to the UN

In a significant gesture underscoring the new government’s commitment to international diplomacy, Milan Meetarbhan has been officially appointed as Mauritius’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations. This announcement came on Monday, 10 February, from Dhananjay Ramful, the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Meetarbhan is taking over from Jagdish Koonjal, who held the post for several years.
Meetarbhan’s appointment marks a pivotal moment, as he is the first ambassador named by the recently inaugurated government of Change.
His responsibilities will be multifaceted, focusing on urgent global issues, including advocating for the Chagos Islands at international and multilateral institutions—a matter he is well-versed in, having previously worked with the UN between 2011 and 2014.
A distinguished constitutional lawyer, Meetarbhan is poised to champion the nation’s economic, political, and sovereign interests on the world stage.
His expertise will be invaluable as he navigates critical global challenges, ranging from climate change and sustainable development to biodiversity conservation and ocean protection, all while aligning with the ambitions of the UN’s Agenda 2030.
As he embarks on this crucial role, the eyes of both the nation and the international community will be closely watching, anticipating the strides he will make in promoting Mauritius’s interests and contributing to vital global dialogues.
