The water situation on the island has dramatically worsened, raising serious concerns amidst an unprecedented lack of rainfall. As of Monday, 10th February, our reservoirs stand alarmingly low at just 39.6% capacity, in stark contrast to a more hopeful 93.8% at the same point in 2024. Should conditions fail to improve, the island faces the grim prospect of a severe water crisis.

Among our reservoirs, only Mare-Longue has managed to exceed the critical 50% mark, currently filled to 54.5%.

Mare-aux-Vacoas follows closely behind at 42.1%. Unfortunately, the figures take a turn for the worse with Bagatelle and Midlands Dam registering at 38.1% and 36.9% respectively.

The Nicolière and Piton-du-Milieu are similarly struggling, showing levels of 39.2% and 38.1%.

Most alarmingly, La Ferme lies at a dismal 26.3%—a staggering drop from 57% this time last year.

In response to this dire situation, authorities have taken the necessary step of reducing water distribution hours.

Additionally, restrictions will soon be enforced, banning activities such as car wash services and the filling of swimming pools.

Meanwhile, a public awareness campaign is underway across media platforms and social networks, urging residents to adopt a more responsible approach to water usage.

With the stakes so high, it is imperative that we all come together to safeguard our precious water resources while we still can. The time for action is now.
