In a significant development, the Financial Crimes Commission (FCC) has announced the appointment of four new commissioners, effective Friday, 7 February. The newly appointed team comprises legal experts Richard Rault, Nitish Hurnaum, Karrim Namdarkhan, and the seasoned accountant Virginie Lenon.

Making a distinguished return is Karrim Namdarkhan, bringing with him experience from his previous role as a commissioner with the former Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC).

He was appointed to the FCC in March 2024 but stepped down following the general elections.

Under the Financial Crimes Commission Act, any decisions regarding investigations must be made by a panel that includes the commissioners and several senior officials from the commission. Thus, no inquiry can proceed without their collective consent.

As these new appointments take effect, the momentum in the Réduit Triangle is expected to quicken significantly.

Numerous cases have lingered since the general elections, hampered by the absence of commissioners.

Among the pressing matters on the agenda for the FCC is a pivotal investigation linked to the Mauritius Investment Corporation (MIC) and its dealings with various companies, including the controversial Menlo Parks Limited.

It is to our knowledge that Mr. Karrim Namdarkhan was a political appointee of the previous government on the board of the former ICAC and later the FCC. What is the rationale behind his reappointment to the newly constituted FCC board?

To all intents and purposes, is he truly indispensable, given his allegiance to the former government and his evident interest in seeing its opponents investigated while turning a blind eye to its allies?

Are we witnessing yet another instance of a ‘carapat change lichien’—this time condoned by the current government?
