Metro Mayhem: MEL Cracks Down on Rising Incivility & Violence

In a bid to restore order to the troubled transport network, Metro Express Ltd (MEL) has pledged to take drastic action against the alarming surge in incivility and violence plaguing the metro system. Despite the majority of commuters expressing satisfaction with safety conditions, MEL has acknowledged the urgent need to bolster security measures to safeguard both passengers and staff.
As the situation continues to deteriorate, MEL has swung into action, introducing a raft of measures designed to prevent incidents and protect vulnerable travellers.
Top of the agenda is a significant boost to the security presence on trains and in stations.
“Inspectors and security agents are being deployed to anticipate and manage any inappropriate situations,” a MEL spokesperson vowed.
In a further bid to deter would-be troublemakers, the company is ramping up its CCTV surveillance capabilities.
“A comprehensive network of cameras now covers all stations and carriages, enabling constant monitoring and the collection of evidence in the event of an incident,” the spokesperson explained.
MEL is joining forces with law enforcement agencies to enhance vigilance, particularly during peak hours.
“We’re working closely with the police to bolster our defences and prevent incidents from escalating,” the company confirmed.
But MEL knows it can’t do it alone. The company is counting on the active cooperation of commuters to help promote a culture of respect and civility on the network.
To this end, a high-profile awareness campaign – “Ensam nou voyage dan respect” (Let’s travel together with respect) – is being rolled out across various media platforms, including social media, press articles, and onboard announcements.
Commuters are also being encouraged to report any suspicious or threatening behaviour to MEL staff, either by contacting the dedicated assistance line (86001) or using the onboard intercom system.
These concerted efforts have already begun to yield results, with several pickpocketing suspects arrested thanks to footage from the CCTV network shared with the authorities.
However, despite these successes, MEL conceded that anti-social behaviour persists, prompting the company to explore additional solutions.
Among the options under consideration are increasing police presence on trains and in stations, in consultation with the relevant authorities; granting inspectors greater powers, while respecting the existing legal framework; and collaborating with non-governmental organisations and local community representatives to tailor security measures to the specific needs of each area.
MEL is committed to restoring a sense of security and tranquillity to the metro network, and is willing to take bold action to achieve it.
