Road Safety Crisis: 579 Accidents and 17 Lives Lost in 2025
During a parliamentary session on Friday, 7th February 2025, Transport Minister Osman Mahomed laid bare the grim reality of road safety in Mauritius. Responding to a Private Notice Question from Opposition Leader Joe Lesjongard, the minister disclosed that a staggering 579 accidents have been recorded from 1st January to 6th February 2025. Among these, 14 tragic incidents resulted in the loss of 17 lives.
The figures are not just numbers; they represent a profound human tragedy. In the heart of this turmoil, a variety of vehicles have been implicated in these fatal collisions: 9 cars, 6 lorries, 1 bus, and an alarming 11 motorcycles.
