In a momentous ceremony held on Friday, 7th February, the Mauritius Bar welcomed 40 newly sworn-in barristers, marking a significant milestone for the legal community. This prestigious event took place under the watchful eye of a panel of ten Supreme Court judges, led by the Senior Puisne Judge, Nirmala Devat.

Among those taking the oath were notable personalities, including the daughter of the Chief Justice, Bibi Rehana Mungly-Gulbul, who graced the ceremony with her presence, alongside Me Siddhartha Hawoldar’s son.

In a departure from tradition, this year’s proceedings featured a stirring address from Attorney General Gavin Glover, who spoke directly to the incoming barristers.

Emphasising the urgent need for a judicial overhaul to restore public confidence in the legal system, he underscored the critical role these new lawyers would play in shaping the future of justice in Mauritius.

Judge Devat, in her impassioned speech, highlighted the imperative of impartiality within the legal profession.
