Police Officers Arrested for Allegedly Stealing Rs 1.6 M in 2024 Raid

Four officers from the Divisional Crime Intelligence Unit (DCIU) have been arrested in connection with the alleged theft of Rs 1.6 million during a police raid on the home of Iqbal Ramchurn, an animal farmer from Fond-du-Sac. The incident took place on July 15, 2024, and has since raised serious concerns about police integrity and accountability.
On Thursday, February 6, 2024, the officers were summoned by the Financial Crimes Commission (FCC) to answer for their actions.
They were confronted with evidence gathered by the FCC, leading to their arrest under Article 22 of the FCC Act, as confirmed by Ibrahim Rossaye, the Acting Chief Communication Officer of the FCC.
The complete statement by Rossaye can viewed in the following video.
Mr. Ramchurn, accompanied by his wife and lawyer Me Krishna Seewoo, also visited the FCC for an identification parade.
There, he positively identified all four officers involved in the raid.
Adding to the intrigue, a fifth officer, Sergeant Arnasala, who previously led the DCIU, left the country early this week.
The FCC has indicated that he will be summoned to appear upon his return.
This incident is unfolding against the backdrop of a broader investigation into money laundering, where police had earlier seized a total of Rs 3.3 million.
Ramchurn alleged that the officers pocketed over Rs 1 million from this amount.
According to investigation reports, it is believed that the DCIU team hinted at a plan to divide the stolen funds, potentially awarding each of the five officers Rs 200,000.
