Reza Uteem: Law Amendments Coming for Those Earning Over Rs 50,000

In a significant move aimed at addressing the concerns of higher earners, Reza Uteem, the Minister of Labour and Industrial Relations, has announced plans to amend the Workers Rights Act.
During a consultation with trade unions that are part of the Trade Union Fund on Wednesday, 5 February, the Labour Minister revealed that the definition of a “worker” in the legislation is set for a review, specifically to accommodate those earning more than Rs 50,000.
Currently, the law defines a “worker” as an individual with a monthly income of up to Rs 50,000.
This ceiling will be adjusted to better reflect the realities faced by many who fall outside this range.
The Minister emphasized his commitment to engaging with the private sector and hopes to enact these legislative changes within this year.
This announcement is following numerous complaints from employees earning above Rs 50,000 who have been overlooked for benefits such as the 14th month pay and salary compensation.
With these adjustments, the government is responding to the needs of a significant portion of the workforce.
