Meetarbhan Nominated as Mauritius’ New Ambassador to the UN

Milan Meetarbhan, a distinguished constitutional lawyer and former ambassador to the United Nations, is set to take on the role of ambassador once again, this time stationed in New York. This appointment came at a crucial time in the nation’s diplomatic journey, particularly with ongoing discussions surrounding the return of the Chagos Archipelago to Mauritius.
Meetarbhan is no stranger to the Chagos issue; he vigorously defended Mauritius’s stance at the UN from 2011 to 2014 during his previous tenure as ambassador.
His deep understanding of the matter has only grown, as he is an active member of the “High-Level Committee” led by Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam that is focused on this pivotal issue.
Earlier this January, he was part of a delegation that travelled to London on two occasions to advance negotiations between the United Kingdom and Mauritius, further illustrating his commitment to this cause.
The Mauritian government views Meetarbhan’s return to such a critical position as a strategic move.
